FRC congratulates the 21 graduates who completed our special Kwéyòl Literacy program “ Pojé Liékwi an Monchi èk Gozilé”.
On 3rd June 2023, twenty-one Saint Lucians graduated from the Monsignor Patrick Anthony Folk Research Centre’s special Kwéyòl Literacy program “ Pojé Liékwi an Monchi èk Gozilé” held at the Gros-Islet Primary School. This training is a continuation of an initiative which began in October 2022 during Mwa Éwitaj Kwéyòl through Konsit Konmin.
Konsit Konmin was one of the main Kwéyòl language related events conceptualised by the FRC. It adopts a grassroots, community-centred approach to documentation and research, and forms part of a revitalized effort to understand the evolution of culture within Saint Lucian communities. One of its principal aims is to promote the Kwéyòl language within the community in a variety of ways such as encouraging public dialogue in Kwéyòl, and examining the current use of Kwéyòl. In October 2022, the Gros-Islet and Laborie Communities hosted the inaugural event.
As part of its continued commitment to promote the Kwéyòl language the FRC has endeavoured to teach Kwéyòl through the relationships established within communities. The overall aim is a lifelong celebration of Kwéyòl language and culture and sustained education throughout the nation. During Pojé Liékwi an Monchi èk Gozilé participants received foundational literacy in the reading, writing and speaking of the Kwéyòl language. The FRC wishes to congratulate all participants for their commitment and the facilitators, Marilyn Hyacinth and Lindy-Ann Alexander who make the movement for Kwéyòl Literacy possible.
